What Your Job Will Be Like
As a key contributor supporting the Space Control Capabilities department, you will play an essential role supporting all Space Domain Awareness (SDA) efforts. You will work directly with customers, helping to translate their needs into actionable program opportunities. Your expertise in SDA will enable you to take minimal direction while independently extending and enhancing interactions initiated by the program manager.
Your responsibilities will include developing cost estimates and supporting program development activities that align with the strategic goals of the Space Mission Program. You will engage with a broad range of external stakeholders, including government agencies, industrial partners, and the wider space community, to help advance Sandia's leadership in space control and situational awareness.
By collaborating closely with mission area leaders and the Science & Technology community, you will contribute to the growth and diversification of Sandia's space capabilities, ensuring the lab remains a vital part of the nation's space defense and intelligence efforts.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
- Engage directly with customers and external partners to understand and support their space domain awareness requirements.
- Develop and refine cost estimates and proposals to support new and ongoing space control program opportunities.
- Collaborate with the program manager to extend and enhance customer interactions and program development efforts with minimal supervision.
- Coordinate with internal mission area leaders and the broader Science & Technology community to align efforts with strategic goals.
- Analyze and synthesize technical and programmatic information to inform decision-making and strategic planning.
- Collaborate/coordinate with management, project leadership, other administrative and technical staff from internal and external organizations on various tasks.
- Represent Sandia at meetings, workshops, and conferences, which may require moderate travel to government agencies, industry partners, and other key stakeholders.
- Support the identification and development of innovative technologies and capabilities that advance national space situational awareness and control objectives.
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.
Salary Range
$117,500 - $235,700
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require
- A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and five (5) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
- The ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q and SCI clearance
Qualifications We Desire
The ideal R&D S&E, Data Science candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:
- Graduate degree in a relevant computationally-intensive discipline where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
- Experience in developing software for enterprise and national security applications.
- Experience acquiring, preparing, and analyzing real world data.
- Demonstrated software development skills and familiarity with modern software development practices.
- Proven ability to work and communicate effectively in a collaborative and interdisciplinary team environment.
Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:
- Proven ability to work independently with minimal direction while effectively supporting program management activities.
- Strong skills in developing cost estimates and supporting proposal efforts.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage with customers and external partners.
- Willingness and ability to travel moderately to support customer engagements and represent Sandia at external events.
About Our Team
6350 Space Mission Engineering
We are focused on developing future program opportunities for the Space Mission Program, engaging with key external communities, agencies, and industrial entities. The strategic goals of SMEPO are realized through program development in five key mission areas including 1) Traditional Multispectral Sensing, 2) Missile Warning and Missile Defense, 3) Mission Data Processing, Exploitation, and Dissemination, 4) Space Situational Awareness and Space Control, and 5) Space Based ISR. The leaders of these mission areas are responsible for achieving the SMP development and diversification activities. SMEPO also teams with the broad S&T community to drive the development of technologies that will differentiate Sandia as a key member of the Nation's space community.

We develop advanced prototype and leading-edge production software systems supporting modelling/simulation and data analysis systems to deliver time-critical and actionable information for our mission partners and the Nation. The 6370 group delivers software for the future that enables critical national missions, sustainably and securely providing high veracity information to assure the nation's security.
Posting Duration

Security Clearance
Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs
If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
