Your Impact
Axon is seeking a Senior Lead, Revenue Accounting Systems to serve as a senior accounting subject matter expert within our Revenue Accounting organization. The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in revenue recognition under ASC 606, a strong grasp of US GAAP as applied to complex multi-element arrangements, and direct, hands-on experience operating within an accounting close environment.
This individual will represent Revenue Accounting in the design, implementation, and enhancement of Axon's revenue accounting engine and broader quote-to-cash (QTC) ecosystem. The ability to translate accounting requirements into system solutions - having lived that process from the accounting side - is essential. Candidates who have participated in or led a revenue accounting system implementation (e.g., Zuora Revenue / RevPro, RevStream, RightRev, NetSuite ARM, or Oracle Revenue Management Cloud) while sitting in an accounting seat are strongly preferred.
This is an individual contributor role with broad cross-functional influence, reporting to the VP of Global Revenue Controller. The successful candidate will be a builder and problem-solver who thrives at the intersection of technical accounting and operational systems.
Location: Any Axon hub location (Hybrid - Tue-Fri onsite)
Reports to: Vice President, Revenue & Technical Accounting
Direct Reports: 0 - Individual Contributor
What You'll Do
Revenue Accounting & Close
- Apply ASC 606 revenue recognition principles to evaluate and document treatment of complex, multi-element customer arrangements, including SSP analyses, contract modifications, and variable consideration.
- Lead and support monthly, quarterly, and annual revenue close activities within the revenue accounting system (e.g., Zuora Revenue / RevPro, RevStream, RightRev, or NetSuite ARM), ensuring accuracy and completeness of recognized revenue posted to the general ledger.
- Assist in the preparation and review of revenue accounting analyses, reconciliations, and deal review packages for management and external audit.
- Develop, document, and maintain internal revenue accounting policies, ensuring alignment with US GAAP and SOX control requirements.
- Identify and communicate the accounting implications of new products, go-to-market strategies, and contract structures to Finance and Commercial leadership.
- Collaborate with FP&A to support the revenue forecasting process and provide monthly variance analysis and commentary.
- Facilitate internal and external audit activities, including preparation of audit support schedules and responses to auditor inquiries.
Revenue Systems & Process Improvement
- Serve as the primary accounting voice in system implementation and enhancement projects for Axon's revenue accounting engine (e.g., Zuora Revenue / RevPro, RevStream, RightRev, NetSuite ARM, or equivalent platform), ensuring system configuration accurately reflects GAAP accounting requirements.
- Partner with IT, Commercial Operations, and external implementation partners to design, test, and deploy scalable, compliant revenue recognition system configurations.
- Perform user acceptance testing (UAT) of system changes, validating that accounting outcomes are correct before go-live.
- Lead data migration activities for revenue contracts, coordinating with IT and finance to ensure completeness, accuracy, and audit-readiness.
- Develop and maintain the roadmap for accounting process automation, prioritize improvement initiatives, and present plans to Finance leadership.
- Proactively identify manual accounting processes suitable for automation and lead implementation of solutions to reduce close cycle time and error risk.
- Evaluate upstream process changes in CRM, CPQ, and billing systems for downstream accounting impact and system readiness.
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or closely related field.
- CPA license or active candidacy is strongly preferred. CMA designation or CMA (Inter) with demonstrated revenue accounting experience will also be considered.
Experience
- 7+ years of progressive experience in revenue accounting, with direct involvement in the accounting close, deal review, and revenue recognition under ASC 606 / US GAAP.
- Hands-on experience implementing or significantly enhancing a revenue accounting engine (e.g., Zuora Revenue / RevPro, RevStream, RightRev, NetSuite ARM, Oracle Revenue Management Cloud, or SAP BRIM) while sitting in an accounting role - not solely in a systems or IT capacity. This is a strong preference.
- Demonstrated experience reviewing and documenting accounting treatment for complex, multi-element arrangements including SaaS subscriptions, hardware, and professional services.
- Experience performing and reviewing standalone selling price (SSP) analyses and variable consideration assessments.
- Background supporting SOX 404 compliance in a revenue accounting context, including design and operation of revenue-cycle controls.
- Experience with Big 4 audit support or employment at a multinational, publicly traded technology or SaaS company with high transaction volume and complex revenue arrangements is a plus.
- Familiarity with the broader quote-to-cash ecosystem (CRM, CPQ, CLM, billing) and how upstream data flows into the revenue accounting engine.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in one or more revenue accounting systems: Zuora Revenue (RevPro), RevStream, RightRev, NetSuite ARM, Oracle Revenue Management Cloud, or equivalent platform.
- Advanced Excel skills required; experience with data tools such as Alteryx, PowerBI, or SQL a plus.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with demonstrated ability to explain accounting positions to non-accounting stakeholders and to external auditors.
- Self-directed, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.
- Experience leveraging AI tools (e.g., generative AI assistants, LLM-based workflows) to improve operating efficiency and automate routine accounting tasks.
