Job Description

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is seeking a Group Manager for the Applied Engineering (AE) Group in the Energy Security and Resilience Center (ESRC). In the service of advancing clean, secure, and resilient energy systems at all scales, AE Group members conduct analyses, develop and deploy models and tools, provide training, perform site assessments, and deliver technical assistance for a variety of energy system projects. AE Group staff also evaluate the performance of advanced energy systems on NREL’s unique laboratory capabilities.  Projects may include high performance building systems, microgrid design and analysis, and new technology demonstration and validation to accelerate the characterization, implementation, and use of innovative energy technologies and processes. Group members help partners at Federal agencies, international, state, and local communities and governments, military bases, private sector partners, and campuses to develop and meet their energy goals.

This position is both a hands-on first-line supervisor for around twenty-five people and an individual contributor within a matrixed organizational structure. The Group Manager role of this position is budgeted at 30% of the individual’s time. The remaining 70% will be to lead and/or contribute to technical work in support of the strategic goals of NREL and a diverse set of partners.    

The successful candidate will support the professional development of group members, help balance staff workload, provide coaching to team members, conduct performance reviews, ensure knowledge and compliance with organizational policies, and fulfill various administrative responsibilities.  The Group Manager will support the development and implementation of the Group’s and Center’s strategies and will also lead or contribute to the production and review of technical reports, presentations, and concept papers, with the opportunity to present findings at relevant technical meetings. The incumbent will also coordinate development of strategic business opportunities.

As an individual contributor, the Group Manger will provide technical support and lead teams in areas such as energy efficiency, renewable energy generation, energy storage, advanced mobility, demand response, efficient water systems, and energy systems integration to optimize energy performance, reduce costs, and to improve operational security and resilience. The Group Manager may also conduct engineering analysis using software tools to evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of renewable energy, energy efficiency, storage, and conventional generation for real-world projects and for evaluations of energy system security and resilience leveraging NREL’s extensive experimental capabilities.



Requirements

Basic Qualifications

This role can be hired at a Group Manager II or a Group Manager III level.

Group Manager II
Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Electrical or other related discipline and 9 years experience in technically related research discipline; Or, Master’s Degree in Mechanical, Electrical or other related discipline and 7 years experience in technically related research discipline; Or, PhD in Mechanical, Electrical or other related discipline and 4 years experience in technically related research discipline.

Group Manager III
Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Electrical or other related discipline and 14 years experience in technically related research discipline; Or, Master’s Degree in Mechanical, Electrical or other related discipline and 12 years experience in technically related research discipline; Or, PhD in Mechanical, Electrical or other related discipline and 9 years experience in related technical research discipline.

Additional Required Qualifications

  • Previous management, budget development and/or significant leadership of a large portfolio of impacts analysis and complex research projects involving multi-disciplinary, cross-organizational teams
  • Project leadership experience: management of multi-disciplinary teams, adherence to budget, scope, and schedule
  • Experience with multi-disciplinary teams (e.g., electrical and mechanical engineering; vehicle, building, and storage technologies; etc.)
  • Proven problem-solving and negotiation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively lead and direct personnel with diverse skills, work styles and values, both directly and through subordinate management in a flexible work environment
  • Demonstrated broad understanding of engineering processes, from requirements definition and design through deployment and performance evaluation
  • Knowledge of energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies, and related security and resilience challenges posed by natural and human sources of disruption
  • Experience with operation and validation of distributed energy technologies and systems
  • Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills
  • Can effectively communicate with and advise external clients along with experience presenting to clients and partners
  • High standards of work quality
  • Knowledge of applicable industry policies, practices and market dynamics
  • Knowledge of energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies, and related energy security and resilience challenges and mitigations
  • Experience managing projects according to scope, budget, staffing, scope, and schedule
  • Ability to travel within and outside the United States and to DoD military bases
  • Experience in management and implementation of real-world engineering projects.
  • Clearance: Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE “Q” Security Clearance*.

    * Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience executing projects for government clients such as the DoD, port and airport authorities, state or local governments or utlities
  • Experience deploying and validating distributed energy technologies and systems
  • Clearance: Currently holds a DOE “Q” Security Clearance.
